Wortley has been a fixture of South Yorkshire golf since 1894, when the club was established following the game's surge in popularity among the area's prosperous families. The course evolved from its initial nine holes to a full eighteen by 1911, and was subsequently refined by the renowned architect Harry Colt in the late 1920s, becoming known for its undulating fairways and demanding greens set within a pastoral landscape bordered by dense woodland.
