Founded in 1893 on naturally drained sandy soil, Blackwell was comprehensively redesigned by Tom Simpson and Herbert Fowler in 1923 to create an 18-hole course now prized for its strategic design within modest acreage. The club's amateur credentials are firmly established, having hosted exhibition matches featuring Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones in the Golden Age, and counting Open Champion Sandy Lyle among its members.
