Golf in Sandwell: Four Clubs, Two Contrasting Landscapes

A small borough with a surprising spread of golf

Sandwell isn't a place most golfers associate with variety, yet its four clubs cover more ground than the borough's size suggests. Between Rowley Regis, Smethwick, and the two West Bromwich postcodes, you'll find a heathland course laid out by one of the game's most respected architects, a links track perched at the highest point in the West Midlands, and a couple of local clubs that keep the game accessible without pretence. Green fees start from £25, which for golf this close to Birmingham city centre is worth knowing about.

Colt's heathland and a links above the city

Sandwell Park Golf Club, in West Bromwich Central, is the standout historically. It began life as West Bromwich Golf Club in 1895 before relocating to its current site at Sandwell Park at Christmas 1897, and the course itself was designed by H.S. Colt, a name that carries weight wherever it appears on a scorecard. The heathland setting sits on the edge of Sandwell Valley, in the green belt where Birmingham, West Bromwich, and Walsall meet, and it's close enough to Junction 1 of the M5 to make it an easy stop for visiting golfers. Football fans will note it's barely 500 metres from The Hawthorns, home of West Bromwich Albion.

Dudley Golf Club, in Rowley Regis, offers the county's links character despite sitting nowhere near the coast — a reminder that
