Heathland course designed by James Braid in 1899, set on free-draining sandy soil offering year-round play near Grays.
A brief history
Orsett Golf Club was founded in 1899 with the course designed by James Braid, the five-time Open champion whose architectural work shaped golf across the British Isles. The Orsett site sits on free-draining sandy heathland, a rare soil type in Essex and one that gives the course year-round playability when nearby parkland tracks are heavy underfoot. Braid's heathland designs are particularly prized by golf historians and Orsett remains one of the better-preserved examples of his work in the south-east. The club has maintained a strong traditional members' culture throughout its history.
