Founded in 1903, Newport Golf Club sits at 300 feet elevation within the ancient woodland of Llwyni Wood and is regarded as one of South Wales' finest parkland courses. The layout benefited from the input of Harry S Colt, Britain's leading golf course architect of the early twentieth century, who advised on significant improvements in 1912–1913; the course has since earned recognition as one of the best inland courses in Wales.
