Appleby Golf Club, founded in 1894 and relocated to its present moorland site in 1903, was designed by Open Champion Willie Fernie to take full advantage of natural contours, heather and bracken. Built on free-draining sandstone, the course is playable year-round and hosts County Championship matches; its celebrated 15th hole, the Bell Hole, features Hilton Beck and a concealed green.
